About This Course

Cryptocurrency tracing becomes much easier to understand when you stop looking at it only as a concept and start working with actual transactions. This course is designed to take you through that progression. You'll begin by building the foundational knowledge and vocabulary needed to understand what you're seeing on the blockchain. Then you'll put that knowledge to work through practical application exercises based on a real-world Pig Butchering investigation involving Tether (USDT) on the Ethereum blockchain. You'll learn to navigate Etherscan, interpret transaction data, follow the movement of cryptocurrency between wallet addresses, identify important investigative information, and recognize when funds reach a centralized cryptocurrency exchange. Just as importantly, you'll learn to document what you find using the included Cryptocurrency Transaction Tracing Log (CTTL) and monitor wallet addresses for future activity using Etherscan's Watch List. The goal isn't to teach you everything about cryptocurrency investigations. It's to give you a practical tracing process you can understand, perform yourself, document, and continue building on.

I created this course to bridge the gap between understanding cryptocurrency and actually tracing it. Before retiring from law enforcement, I spent years investigating financial crimes and cryptocurrency-related cases and teaching cryptocurrency investigations to law enforcement. One thing became clear: understanding the terminology is important, but real confidence comes from applying that knowledge yourself. That's how this course is structured. You'll first learn the concepts and vocabulary you need to understand what you're seeing. Then you'll put that knowledge to work through practical application exercises where you do the tracing. You won't simply watch me follow transactions. You'll work through the blockchain activity yourself, follow wallet addresses, identify where the cryptocurrency ultimately goes, and document your findings using the CTTL. No expensive blockchain analytics software is required. Just the foundational knowledge, practical tools, and hands-on experience to develop a tracing skill you can continue building on.
